Precision Machining specifications for Military and Defense Industries

Greno Industries has provided precision machining services to customers across a wide range of industries for over 30 years. This experience, combined with our advanced machining equipment, enables us to produce CNC milled, CNC turned, as well as ground and fabricated components.

In this post, we would like to focus on our work for the ground defense part of the industry. This includes, tanks, tactical vehicles, personnel carriers type vehicles.

AS9100D Precision Machining in Military Industries

The military industry is subject to strict specifications and standards regarding the design and construction of the parts and products used in their applications. For example, components must meet AS9100 standards, or Mil-spec standards. Greno is certified to MIL-Q-9858, MIL-45208, MIL-STD-4522a as well as ISO9001-2015.  These requirements and restrictions help ensure components will perform reliably and safely in critical situations or extreme conditions. Military OEM manufacturers often specify advanced manufacturing techniques and technologies, along with precision machining to make sure the components fully meet strict guidelines.

Precision machining is an overview term which covers all high-precision subtractive manufacturing processes (removing material from a workpiece to create a component), including CNC turning. This method of manufacturing has many advantages when producing aerospace and military components, such as:

  • Greater part accuracy. At Greno, Precision machining utilizes CNC technology, which allows manufacturers to pre-program the machining equipment with the exact instructions for machine operation on the workpiece. This produces tight tolerances with a lower risk of machining error and inaccuracies.
  • Broader design capabilities. Manufacturers utilize precision machining to create a wide range of component parts in varying shapes, sizes, and complexities.
  • Wider material flexibility. Precision machining gives military engineers, processes  accommodations to an extensive array of high strength materials, providing OEMs with many options to find the best materials that meet the requirements of their product.
  • Faster production speeds. Manufacturers using Greno’s vast array and sizes of CNC machines, can fulfill larger orders with shorter lead times because they have the right machine for the right job, giving you the most affordable solution. Small machine shops with less capabilities fit all their work into one system spending more time with less accuracy.

Military may also include military aircraft such as fighter and patrol helicopters, and bombers; Shipbuilding – including assault vessels, aircraft carriers, submarines; Space Systems such as satellites, launch vehicles, ground systems, which we will discuss in future posts.
